Used Car Buyer's Checklist in Fort Worth, TX
Buying a used vehicle is a great option if you're looking to save money while investing in a quality vehicle. But buying a used car always carries some risk. When it comes to history and reliability, it's important to find out as much as possible about the vehicle before you buy. Here are several tips to follow whenever you're considering a used vehicle:
If you've decided on what type of vehicle you want to buy, you'll have a more specific list of items to inspect. When researching the vehicle, find out what the common problems, if any, the models you are considering have.
Always check the condition of the exterior. Walk around the vehicle and look for scratches, dents or rust. Inspect the body panels too. Everything should line up evenly, and the doors, hood and trunk should be able to open and close properly. Inspect the tires to make sure each tire is of the same brand and in solid condition (no cracks, bulges, scuffing or bad tread). Lastly, always check the lights to make sure they all work properly and are without cracks, damages and signs of moisture.
Check the interior for any odors. If the car smells like mold, must or mildew, there may be a water leak or flood damage. Check the seats to see if they are worn or have any tears in the upholstery, and make sure they adjust properly and that you can move the driver’s seat into a comfortable position. Next, test out the controls and instruments to check if they are working properly. Lastly, inspect the roof for any signs of staining or water leaking through a sunroof or window.
Don't forget to look under the hood! Check the belts, hoses, fluids, oil and transmission fluids to make sure everything is at the proper level and that there are no cracks, leaks or water. Also look underneath the vehicle to see if anything is leaking.
The test-drive is one of the most important parts of your inspection. When starting the vehicle, pay attention to how long it takes for the car to start, and listen for any odd noises. Drive on a variety of different roads and try different speeds. Make sure the transmission shifts smoothly and that the brakes offer good stopping power without pulling the vehicle to either side.
Make sure you have the vehicle identification number (VIN) and run a Vehicle History Report before you complete the purchase. Most dealerships will provide a report for all of the used vehicles in their inventory. Have the vehicle inspected at a trusted repair shop before you make the final decision.
